Next Generation of Mobile Devices
Three out of four Japanese including children own mobile phones, many of them containing chips that make them de facto wallets. Pass a phone over a carton of sushi in the market and the sushi is charged to their credit card; no need to wait in the checkout line. Similarly, the phone can be used as a commuter ticket on the train, or as a dictionary or karaoke player; some phones even have alarm buzzers that connect to the nearest police station. “The Japanese are the driving force in the high-quality handset,” says Gen Isayama, a partner at Dixon Capital Management (DCM).
