Intel Text Reader
INTEL has launched a handheld reader in the UK and US to help people with vision problems or dyslexia.
Using a built-in high resolution camera, the Intel Reader allows user to capture a section of printed text, which it converts to digital text that can then be reproduced on screen and reproduced on screen and repeated via voice synthesis (the unit has an earphone jack for more personal audio).
A separate Portable Capture Station, which looks a bit like a foldable camera rostrum, is designed for longer sections of text such as magazines and books, which can be stored for later ‘perusal’.
The idea came from Intel’s direct of access technology dyslexia sufferer Ben Foss, who was identified with the learning disorder at school.
