Death of Polish Worker in Construction Environment Leads to £125,000 Fine

A Glasgow company has been fined £125,000 after a Polish worker died on one of its sites.

Curot Contracts Ltd, which trades as Dimension Shopfitting, was fined after Falkirk Sheriff Court heard how Witold Jelen, (50), died when he fell eight meters from an balcony area at a former cinema in July 2007. Mr Jelen and another worker fell while they were removing parts of the original concrete slabs and beams.

HSE Inspector Murray Provan said after the case: “This accident was entirely foreseeable. The construction company failed to provide a safe system of work, particularly in relation to providing a system to prevent falls or mitigate the consequences of a fall.”
